living the ordinary seeing the extraordinary

A Spider Tale

If you have noticed I have been a little absent from Everyday Ann the past couple of weeks, I guess ordinary life took over including enjoying the warmth and beauty of summer, but it has led me to become a little neglectful of this online space. To be honest another reason is we have been hunkered down in a period of discernment recently, seeking God’s will for our family, exploring options, making pros and cons charts, lots of heart to heart conversations and tons of prayer…but I will save all of that for another post. Instead I will try and bring you a little humor for your Wednesday, because it’s always a great day for a laugh and glass of wine to push us through the rest of the week.

This past weekend my husband and I went to a Matthew Kelly conference, titled Living Everyday With Passion and Purpose, phenomenal as all of his events are. The event was held in a church and you could hear a pin drop as everyone soaked in his profound and yet simple wisdom.

As the last talk began I noticed that the man in front of me had something on the collar of his shirt right by the back of his neck. At first I forced myself to dismiss the thought that it could be a spider and instead tried to convince myself that it was a large piece of lint. I could see lines coming from this piece of lint and creating a new pattern on this gentleman’s checkered shirt. No, no it was not a piece of lint!

There was a living, moving spider, focused and ready to make his approach onto the man’s neck, just waiting for the right moment to strike. I sat there paralyzed in fear, my conscience racing back and forth, trying to look somewhere else but the villain was in my line of sight.

Do I tap this man on the shoulder and inform him that there is a spider on his neck or try to quietly ignore it, hoping it doesn’t move. If I tell him, there is a chance he may stand up and scream (as I probably would) and disturb the whole audience and cause a scene, no fault of his own just sheer fear taking over. Or do I chance it and pray the spider stays put and doesn’t start his way onto this man’s skin, saving the risk of screams but causing myself to be tortured at the constant sight of it.

Needless to say I may have missed some of the last talk, according to the amount of notes I took it looks like I only heard 5 minutes. I did hear this great phrase though and was able to jot it down. One to remember when life seems rushed and we are just living for the weekend.

“Right here, nowhere else, right now, never again!”

(Sorry there isn’t a picture with this post, I didn’t want to cause anyone undue anxiety by forcing you to look at a spider!)

It's never been about coffee or chocolate or wine. It's never been about coffee or chocolate or wine. It is a heart matter. A Creator who seeks our hearts. A Savior who's heart we seek. Because in the end it is only He who can truly fill it and make it whole.

Rest. Jesus' command to his apostles in today's Go Rest. Jesus' command to his apostles in today's Gospel. Rest awhile. Something that is such a struggle for me, but it is a command from Jesus himself. After His apostles had ministered, taught and served, Jesus knew they needed rest. To pray, to fill themselves, to refocus, to reflect, to wonder at God's faithfulness.
.
So why do I find it so difficult as a mother to make it a priority to carve out time for myself to rest. And not feel guilty about it. Surely my wisdom does not exceed God's. Christ knew that in order for His apostles to continue to give to others they first had to be filled.

How are you resting this weekend?
